No. 26 Cal Baseball Tops BYU, 13-3

BERKELEY, CA - In another impressive hitting display, the Cal baseball team defeated BYU, 13-3, Friday at Evans Diamond. The Golden Bears were led at the plate by freshman first baseman Chris Errecart, who hit a grand slam in the first inning off of Cougar starter Bryce Searle (0-1, 3.0 innings, six hits, seven runs, three walks, two strikeouts), and finished the day 4-for-5 with five RBI. Cal had defeated BYU, 11-1, on Thursday.
Other top hitters for Cal were junior left fielder Justin Nelson, who went 4-for-5 with a lead-off home run in the fourth inning, and senior center fielder David Weiner, who was 3-for-5 with three RBI, including an RBI triple in the second inning. Senior catcher Chris Grossman added two hits with a double. The Bears finished with 15 hits on the day.
The winning pitcher for Cal was junior starter Kyle Crist (1-0), who pitched 5.0 innings with four hits, one run, two walks and six strikeouts.
Top hitters for BYU were Ben Saylor and Rob Itri with two hits apiece. The Cougars three runs came on a Saylor RBI single in the third inning and Itri's two-run homer in the sixth inning. The Bears had exploded for four runs in the first on Errecart's grand slam, then added a run in the second on Weiner's RBI triple.
Cal got two more runs in the fourth inning on Nelson's homer and a RBI ground out by Weiner. Weiner had another RBI in the sixth on a single to right center. In the seventh, the Bears scored four times via a sacrifice fly to center by Allen Craig, a RBI single by Nelson, a RBI single by junior second baseman David Nicholson and a throwing error by BYU catcher Adam Wilkes. Cal added one more run in the eighth on a RBI single by Errecart.
The Bears will face BYU in the third game of the series, Saturday, Jan. 31 at 12 p.m. at Evans Diamond.
