Stanford Handles Fullerton in Pac-10 Meet
Jan. 31, 2004
Stanford, Calif. - The Stanford wrestling team put on a display for past Cardinal greats, beating Cal State Fullerton 24-9 on the eve of wrestling reunion weekend. The Cardinal won seven of ten bouts to dominate the Titans from beginning to end. The victory was Stanford's third dual meet victory in a row, and brings the team's current record to 6-4, 3-2 Pac-10.
The dual began at 133 pounds, where senior Paul Gross jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, throttling Fullerton's Alvaro Arreola by an 11-0 major decision. The two matches to follow would prove to be conditioning marathons as Stanford's Brad Metzler and Fullerton's Juan Mora would need two overtime periods to determine a winner. In a battle of wills, Mora finally won out by a 3-1 margin. At 149 pounds, much of the same battle of wills transpired as Stanford's Luis Vendrell (ranked 4th in Pac-10) and Fullerton's Brett Gordon (3rd in Pac-10) also needed a second sudden victory period to determine a winner, with Vendrell securing a late takedown, the match, and some Cardinal momentum to put the Cardnial up by a 7-3 team score.
The Cardinal would win the next three matches with solid performances from the heart of their lineup. Matt Gentry (157), Brian Perry (165), and Imad Kharbush (174) all scored impressive victories for Stanford, putting the match score at 16-3.
Sophomore Shawn Ritzenthaler (285) continued his winning ways, never giving his opponent a chance to get into the match as he turned Fullerton's Matt Fitu four times on his way to a 16-1 technical fall.
Stanford's freshman superstar Tanner Gardner (125) ended the dual with an exciting victory over Fullerton's Jesse Miramontes. Gardner controlled the match handily until the third period when he was put on his back in a dangerous choke hold by Miramontes. Gardner endured the scare, took down Miramontes one last time, and put the final stamp on an impressive night for the Cardinal wrestlers.
This is the third straight Pac-10 dual meet victory for the Cardinal. After a tough non-conference schedule, the Stanford wrestling team has shown signs of tremendous improvement. In his second year, National Rookie of the Year Coach Steve Buddie has guided the Cardinal to several impressive wins as a team, as well as notable individual performances. On Monday, Matt Gentry (157) will travel to Iowa to compete at the prestigious NWCA All-Star Classic.
Stanford will take a partial squad to the All-Cal Invitational tomorrow at San Francisco State University, and then returns home for a big Pac-10 meet against Oregon State on Saturday, February 7 at 1:00 pm.
