Cal Baseball Loses at Saint Mary's, 2-1
March 6, 2004
MORAGA, CA - Cal scored a run in the first inning on a double by senior David Weiner, but was slowed by Saint Mary's Jordan Simo, as Simo ended up pitching a complete game as the Gaels defeated the Golden Bears, 2-1, Saturday afternoon at Louis Guisto Field. Saint Mary's snapped an eight-game losing streak as it improved to 4-14 on the season. Cal dropped to 9-11. The Bears had defeated Saint Mary's, 9-2, in the first game of the series Friday.
Simo gave up his lone run to Cal in the first inning after surrendering a lead off double to sophomore third baseman Allen Craig, who later scored Weiner's double. After that point, Simo (2-3) was outstanding, pitching 9.0 innings with seven hits, one walk and three strikeouts, while not allowing a hit in the eighth and ninth innings.
The Gaels scored their two runs in the third inning. Stefan Foushee singled with one out to start the rally and then with two outs Gilbert Gil singled, followed by a RBI single by Mike Sansoe. With Gil on third, Cal's junior right-hander Mike Padgett tried to pick off Sansoe at first and threw the ball out of play, allowing Gil to score the go-ahead run.
Despite the loss, Padgett (1-2) still pitched well, throwing 7.0 innings with seven hits, one earned run, two walks and a career-high nine strikeouts. Top hitters for the Bears were Weiner (2-for-4, double, RBI) and junior second baseman David Nicholson, who was 3-for-4.
Saint Mary's will face Cal in the final game of the three-game series, Sunday, Mar, 7 at 1 p.m. at Evans Diamond.
Saint Mary's: None.
