Unearned Runs Cost Beavers At Hawai'i

March 7, 2004

HONOLULU, Haw. - A pair of defensive mistakes led to four unearned runs in the second inning as Oregon State lost to Hawai'i 7-3 on Saturday night in the championship game of the First Hawai'i Title Rainbow Baseball Tournament at Les Murakami Stadium. OSU (10-4 overall), which finished as the tournament runner-up, had three players named to the all-tournament team - infielders Chris Kunda and Shea McFeely and outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury.

The Beavers ended their 11-day road trip with a split of the eight games at the Riverside Baseball Invitational and the Hawai'i tourney. Oregon State will open its season with a non-league series against Gonzaga next weekend, playing the Bulldogs on Friday at 3 p.m., Saturday at 1 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field.

Against Hawai'i (14-7), OSU took a 1-0 lead in the first inning but the Rainbows answered with Jaziel Mendoza's two-run homer off Andy Baldwin in the bottom of the inning.

Hawai'i got a runner to second base with two out in the bottom of the second, but Baldwin appeared to be out of trouble when Greg Kish swung and missed at a third strike. The ball got away from catcher Billy Munich for a passed ball, though, and that put runners at first and third.

Matt Inouye then blooped a double just over the glove of Beaver shortstop Tony Calderon to score one run and leave runners at second and third, and OSU intentionally walked Mendoza to load the bases. Oregon State again appeared to be through the inning when Baldwin got Rocky Russo to ground the ball to third baseman Shea McFeely, but first baseman Scott Nelson let McFeely's throw get by him and all three runners scored on the play to put the Rainbows up 6-1.

OSU had its chances to get back in the game, putting the first two runners aboard in the fourth, fifth, sixth and eighth innings against UH righthander Clary Carlsen, but the Beavers could get just single runs in the fourth and sixth innings. Rainbow reliever Darrell Fisherbaugh struck out five - including the last four Beaver hitters of the game - to earn the save.

Baldwin took the loss to fall to 2-2 this season. In his four innings, he allowed seven runs (three earned) on nine hits and three walks while striking out five. Freshmen relievers Jake McCormick and Kevin Gunderson combined to blank the Rainbows on two hits over the final five innings.

For the tournament, Ellsbury batted .526 (10-for-19) with six runs scored; Kunda batted .267 (4-for-15) with a double and three runs batted in but recorded 14 assists and four putouts; and McFeely batted .444 (4-for-18) with four doubles and six runs batted in.
