No. 20 Men's Tennis Suffers A Setback Against No. 28 Washington, 4-2/ No. 5 TCU Overcame No. 18 Pepperdine To Win ASU Quadrangular

TEMPE, Ariz.- The No. 20 Arizona State men's tennis team was defeated by No. 28 Washington, 4-2, Monday afternoon at the Whiteman Tennis Center. Arizona State falls to 4-5 on the season, while the Huskies improve 9-5. In the earlier match on the day the No. 5TCU Horned Frogs upended No. 18 Pepperdine, 4-0, to take the ASU Quadrangular.

In doubles play, the Huskies took the first point on the afternoon by taking two doubles matches from the Sun Devils. The No. 1 duo of Daniel Chu and Alex Vlaski defeated the Sun Devils pair of Chris Stewart (Sr., Adelaide, Australia) and Andy Colombo (Jr., Rochester, N.Y.), 8-5 to give the Huskies the edge. Washington then sealed the doubles point with a victory in the No. 2 spot as the team of Alex Slovic and Nick Weiss over ASU's Clinton Letcher (Jr., Melbourne, Australia) and Jonathan Kinsella (So., Astley, England), 8-6. Due to the doubles point already being decided, the No. 3 match between the Sun Devils' Daniel Davies (So., Sydney, Australia) and Ryan McBride (So., Tempe, Ariz.) and Washington's Christoph Palmanshofer and Peter Scharler was not finished.

In singles action, the Huskies earned the victory as they won three of five singles matches. The Sun Devils two points of the match came from victories in the No. 6 and No. 3 positions respectfully. Playing in the No. 6 spot on the afternoon, Christopher Biro (Fr., Adelaide, Australia) defeated the Huskies' Scott Fresenthal in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. The Sun Devils' Colombo, hitting in the No. 3 position, upended Chu, 7-5, 6-4, to earn the second point for ASU.

In the No. 1 spot, ASU's Stewart fell to Vlaski, 6-4, 6-2, while Letcher, playing in the No. 2 position was defeated by Washington's Slovic. While at the No. 4 spot, the Sun Devils' Kinsella took hit match to three sets before coming up short to the Palmanshofer, 4-6, 7-6, 6-2. Since the team dual had already been decided, the No. 5 singles match between the Sun Devils' McBride and the Huskies' Scharler was not completed.

In the first dual of the day, the No. 5 TCU Horned Frogs won the quadrangle with a win over the No. 18 Pepperdine Wave, 4-0. TCU came out strong winning the doubles point and never relinquished their control, winning three straight singles matches claim victory. With the win the Horned Frogs improve to 10-0, while the Wave fall to 8-5 on the season.

Up next the Sun Devils hit the road as they open up Pac-10 play in California against No. 7 USC and No. 10 UCLA. This is the second meeting of the year for the Sun Devils against both teams, as ASU defeated the Bruins, 5-2, in their first meeting and fell, 6-1, to the Trojans. The Sun Devils will square off against the Trojans on Friday, March 12 at 1:30 p.m. at Marks Tennis Stadium. They follow up with a dual against the Bruins on Saturday, March 13 at 1:00 p.m. at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.
