University of British Columbia Dual: The Cal women will begin their 2004 season against the Canadian Champion University of British Columbia on Sunday, March 21 at Redwood Shores. The first race is set to begin at 10 a.m. Last season, Cal beat UBC in all races, with the varsity eight and second varsity eight rowing to double-digit time victories.
Bears 2004 Season Outlook: With 15 returning letterwinners, from last year's fifth-place NCAA squad, the Bears have the experience they need to make the 2004 season the most successful in the program's history. Building upon the success in 2003, which included the program's first-ever win at the San Diego Crew Classic, Cal enters the season with renewed energy and a commitment to reaching a higher level. Leading the way for the Bears are captains Martha Helgeland and Remy Hitomi. Helgeland, a senior from Oslo, Norway, has been in the varsity Boat since her freshman year, and Hitomi, a junior coxswain from Cypress, Calif., is a former walk-on.
