TUCSON, Ariz. - Led by Henry Liaw's seven-under 65, the University of Arizona men's golf team carded a four-under 284 Friday and stands in a tie for fifth place at the Southern Highlands Collegiate.
Liaw, a freshman from Rowland Heights, Calif., continued his run of strong play this spring with a seven-under 65 to take the individual led after 18 holes. Liaw has been under par in six of seven rounds this spring, including four rounds in the 60s. He has a one-stroke lead over Clemson's Jake Ferguson and Arizona State's Niklas Lemke.
In those seven rounds, Liaw is averaging 68.29 strokes and has two top-15 finishes, including a tie for third at the John Burns Intercollegiate, Feb. 18-20, in his last outing.
The freshman's efforts helped the Wildcats post a 288 (-4) total and tie for fifth place with Georgia in the 15-team field. Arizona's total is seven shots of the pace set by tournament leader UNLV. Clemson (279), Arizona State (279) and UCLA (282) round out the top-four places.
UA senior Chris Nallen is also in the top 20 after shooting a one-under 71 in Friday's opening round. He is tied for 18th place two shots ahead of teammate Nathan Lashley, who tallied a one-over 73 and is tied for 32nd place.
