No. 23 Softball Rallies Again; Beavers top Utah 5-1 In Eight Innings
March 12, 2004
FRESNO, Calif. - The No. 23 ranked Oregon State softball team scored four runs in the eighth inning to knock off University of Utah, 5-1, on Friday afternoon at the Clovis Auto Row Classic hosted by Fresno State University.
OSU (22-7) went an extra frame for the second time this season against the Utes (6-12).
Utah scored an unearned run in the third inning to take the early lead, but the Beavers responded with a run in the top of the fourth. Freshman third baseman Sherina Galvan singled to right field scoring Vanessa Iapala who had reached base with a double.
Oregon State added four runs in the eighth inning, taking advantage of three hits and a Utah error to put the game out of reach. Alana Mendoza scored what proved to be the game-winner after Adrienne Alo reached base on an error. Iapala eventually blasted her second double of the day and sixth of the season when she drove a 3-RBI shot to right-center.
'Offensively we took advantage of some opportunities and timely hitting,' said Walker. 'We answered back when our opponent scored and stepped up late in the game when the pressure was on - it was very impressive.'
Freshman hurler Brianne McGowan allowed just four hits while tallying three strikeouts in six innings of work. Senior Monica Hoffman became the pitcher of record when she entered the game in the seventh and struck out a pair of Ute batters in the eighth to secure her 12th victory of the season.
'Monica and Brianne both threw well,' said Walker. 'Overall today, we had strong pitching against two (San Diego State and Utah) very good hitting teams.'
Iapala and Galvan each went 2-for-3 in the game and freshman Mia Longfellow finished with a 2-for-4 clip from the plate. Kelly Petersen's eighth inning single helped extend her team-best 11-game hitting steak.
'These are two very good team wins,' said Walker. 'Hopefully we will carry some of this momentum into tomorrow.'
Oregon State continues tournament action on Saturday with a 9 a.m. game against Long Beach State, followed by a showdown with No. 15 Fresno State at 1 p.m.
