March 12, 2004
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Junior shortstop Kelly Petersen belted a 2-run sixth inning home run to help No. 23 ranked Oregon State rally for a 3-2 victory against San Diego State in Friday's action at the Clovis Auto Row Softball Classic hosted by Fresno State University.
The Beavers (21-7) improved to 15-0 on the season when at least one player hits a home run.
San Diego State (15-13) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the sixth inning after Erin Mahoney led off the inning with a single and Janna Kovensky followed with a home run over the center field fence.
Oregon State rallied back in the bottom of the sixth as freshman Mia Longfellow reached base on an error and Petersen followed with her team-leading 5th home run of the season. Singles by Vanessa Iapala and Sherina Galvan put two more Beaver runners on base and sophomore Lisa Allen knocked in what proved to be the game-winning RBI with a double to right field.
Senior hurler Monica Hoffman earned the complete game victory while allowing six hits to improve to 11-5 on the season.
Petersen finished the game with a perfect 2-for-2 clip from the plate with a double to go along with the home run. Petersen's home run moved her into a tie for 3rd place on Oregon State's all-time home run chart with 15 in her career. Current student assistant coach Shelly Prochaska (2000-03) also has 15 career homers.
Oregon State continues action this afternoon with a 1 p.m. game against University of Utah.
