OSU pounds out 12-2 win over Gonzaga

March 12, 2004

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State had 10 different players with at least one hit and Jake Postlewait pitched his fourth win of the season as the Beavers beat Gonzaga 12-2 Friday afternoon in non-league baseball at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. A crowd of 1,776 took advantage of the sunny day to see OSU (11-4 overall) run its all-time record in home-openers to 76-19.

OSU and Gonzaga (5-10) continue their series on Saturday at 1 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. Benny Beaver will be throwing the first pitch on Saturday and Oregon State men's basketball head coach Jay John will do the honors on Sunday.

After spending their first four weeks of the season on the road, the Beavers found Friday a terrific way to start the home season.

'Especially with the amount of people,' said junior centerfielder Aaron Mathews, who was 2-for-4 with a triple and three runs batted in. 'It was a nice day and it was just a blessing to come out here and have a day like this. And then seeing that many people in the stands helped motivate us to get the job done.'

The crowd was the second-largest at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field since the ballpark's 1999 renovation, and it was the largest crowd for Opening Day since then. The only larger crowd in that period was 1,838 to see the Beavers beat fourth-ranked Stanford 4-3 on April 27, 2002.

'What an awesome crowd,' OSU head coach Pat Casey said. 'The atmosphere was fantastic. Usually when we come out at this time of year, we're wondering if we're going to have to be putting the tarp on the field.'

Postlewait improved to 4-0 on the season, winning for the ninth time in 10 decisions over the last two seasons. The senior lefthander went a season-high seven innings, allowing two runs on five hits and one walk while striking out five. After Postlewait got out of a two-out, bases-loaded situation in the first inning, the Beavers scored three times in the bottom of the first to give him a lead to work with.

'It's always nice to score in the first inning,' Casey said. 'We did a good job of coming out ready to go. We defended well, and Jake was Jake. It can be hard out there when it's your first game at home, the place is full and you're a guy who's supposed to be pretty good. But he's a big-time competitor, he's got good stuff and he gets people out.'

After Jacoby Ellsbury walked and Mike Lissman singled to start the first inning, Andy Jenkins boomed a two-run double off the fence in centerfield. Shea McFeely followed with a run-scoring double to right-center and the Beavers eventually loaded the bases with two out, but Gonzaga lefthander Patrick Donovan was able to get out of the inning without allowing another run.

The Bulldogs got back within 3-2 in the top of the third as Postlewait allowed three singles, but the Beavers responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 7-2 lead. Mathews had a two-run triple to key the inning, chasing Donovan.

OSU scored four more times in the bottom of the sixth inning, with Ellsbury starting the frame with a line-drive home run down the rightfield line that came within a few feet of reaching Washington Way. Mathews added a run-scoring single and Tony Calderon a run-scoring double in the inning.

'You're going to be tough to beat if you get 10 or more hits in a game and good pitching - that's a tough combination,' Mathews said. 'Jacoby finally pulled one - he really torqued that ball.'

The Beavers finished with 13 hits, as Ellsbury and Jenkins both finished 2-for-4 and McFeely extended his hitting streak to seven games. By the end of the third inning, every OSU starter had reached base via a hit or a walk.

'It's always good to get back to winning,' Mathews said of the Beavers, who had lost three of five games last week at a tournament at Hawai'i. 'And getting 13 hits is going to give some guys confidence.'

Jake McCormick and Nathan Pendley both pitched a scoreless inning in relief of Postewait. McCormick, a freshman righthander, has now pitched in seven games without allowing an earned run.
