Softball Shuts Down Santa Clara 11-0

SUNNYVALE, Calif.- The eighth-ranked Washington softball team (15-5) shutout Santa Clara 11-0 this evening at the National Invitational Softball Tournament to compete the sweep of its pool play opponents and advance to tomorrow's championship bracket.
The Huskies unleashed an unrelenting offensive line-up combining for 12 hits and 11 runs. Sophomore Sarah Hyatt led the way with three hits and five runs batted in, while Kristen Rivera drove in three runs.
Washington jumped out on top early, scoring three runs in the first inning on three hits. Dominique Lastrapes led off with a single up the middle and Rita Roach followed with a single through the left side. Hyatt the delivered a towering home run over the centerfield fence- her fourth of the season- to give UW the 3-0 lead.
The Huskies batted around the line-up in the second inning, scoring seven runs before the Broncos could notch an out. Aimee Minor kicked off the rally with a leadoff double and advanced to third base on an error by the second baseman. Courtney Jeffries then singled through the left side to score Minor. Robyn Wike followed with a single and Lastrapes took first after being hit by a pitch. Roach then singled down the left field line to score Jeffries. Hyatt kept the rally going with a two-RBI double to the right field corner and Rivera hit a three-run home run over the right field fence to cap off the inning.
Washington added another run in the fourth frame when Minor doubled down the left field line to score Jamie Rau. Rau was pinch running for Hyatt who had reached base with a leadoff single up the middle.
Junior ace Ashley Boek (7-2) picked up the victory- her second of the day- after scattering five hits and striking out seven. The shutout marked Boek's fourth of the season.
The Huskies will face Wisconsin in the first round of the championship bracket tomorrow at noon.
