Washington Defeats Iowa At National Invitational Softball Tournament
March 12, 2004
SUNNYVALE, Calif.- The eighth-ranked Washington softball team (14-5) defeated Iowa 8-2 this afternoon to open the National Invitational Softball Tournament in a rematch of last season's regional championship.
The Huskies opened the game with four runs in the first inning. Freshman Dominique Lastrapes led off with a walk and UW cleared the bases when the Hawkeyes committed three errors on a sacrifice bunt by Rita Roach. Roach pushed the bunt down to the pitcher but the throw was not caught at first base. The runners advanced on the error and eventually scored when the right fielder over threw third base and the left fielder made an errant throw to the plate.
Kristen Rivera kept the rally going, drawing a walk and moving to second base on a single by Kathy Fiske. Amanda Oleson followed with a fielder's choice and Dena Tyson's infield single scored Rivera. Tyson got herself caught in a run down between first and second base on a delayed steal, which allowed Oleson to score from third and give Washington the 4-0 lead.
Iowa responded in the fourth inning, scoring a pair of runs on a two-run home run by Natalie Johnson.
The Huskies answered in the bottom half of the frame with one run on two hits. Oleson led off with a single to left field and advanced to third on a walk and wild pitch. Aimee Minor then drove in Oleson with a single to right field to give UW the 5-2 edge.
Washington put the game out of reach in the sixth, scoring three more runs on three hits. Tyson doubled down the right field line and Minor drew a walk. Courtney Jeffries then hit a two-RBI single to left field and eventually scored on a Lastrapes single up the middle.
Junior hurler Ashley Boek (6-2) earned the win as she scattered six hits and struck out eight. Iowa's Lisa Birocci (4-4) took the loss as she gave up five runs in three innings of work.
The Huskies continue tournament action this evening with a 7 p.m. match-up against Santa Clara.
