Beavers Make It Two Straight Over Gonzaga

March 13, 2004

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Shea McFeely homered, doubled and drove in five runs as Oregon State beat Gonzaga 13-3 in non-league baseball Saturday afternoon at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. Andy Jenkins added three hits, including a home run, and drove in three more runs as the Beavers (12-4 overall) took the win before a crowd of 1,223.

The Beavers and the Bulldogs (5-11) complete their series Sunday at 1 p.m. OSU men's basketball coach Jay John will throw out the first pitch.

Andy Baldwin allowed just one run in seven innings to pitch the win, improving to 2-3 this season. The sophomore righthander walked two and struck out three, and the Beavers turned four double plays behind him.

'Honestly, I didn't have to do much today,' said Baldwin, who broke a personal two-game losing streak. 'I just threw it down the middle and let them hit it; four double plays will make it a lot easier for you, especially when we're hitting the way we are ... I've had better stuff this season than I had today. We played real good defense and we're hitting the heck out of the ball. It makes it real easy to stay positive.'

The Beavers had 15 hits, running their totals for the first two games of the series to 25 runs and 28 hits. It was pretty much the same script as Friday's 12-2 OSU win - get out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the first inning, score three times in the bottom of the first and win by 10.

Gonzaga loaded the bases with three straight one-out singles in the top of the first, but Baldwin induced a sharply-hit grounder up the middle by Marshall Bratton that Beaver shortstop Tony Calderon turned into an inning-ending double play. In the bottom of the inning, Mike Lissman singled and Jenkins walked with one out to set up McFeely's three-run homer to right-center off GU starter Ed Clelland.

With two straight wins, the Beavers are regaining some of the good feelings they had before winning just two of five games at the Hawa'i tournament last week to cap an 11-day road trip.

'It was real nice coming home and practicing three days this week after being on the road for a long time,' said McFeely, who bumped his batting average to .382 and has an eight-game hitting streak. 'We made some mistakes that we don't normally make because we'd been on the road a long time, and we hadn't practiced. We had time to fix those things up and that helped.'

The Beavers tacked on a run with Aaron Mathews' run-scoring single in the bottom of the third, then broke the game open with a seven-run fourth inning. That outburst included a two-run double by McFeely; a two-run single by Lissman, who raised his batting average to .421 with a 2-for-4 day; a run-scoring double by Mathews, who is hitting .354 after a 2-for-4 day; and a run-scoring single by Jenkins.

Jenkins, who raised his average from .273 to .319 in one afternoon by going 3-for-3, added his third homer of the year to start the sixth inning. The Beavers tacked on their final run in the bottom of the seventh on a run-scoring single by Jacoby Ellsbury, who kept his average at an even .400 with a 2-for-5 afternoon.

That was all to the delight of the Beavers' second straight four-digit crowd to start the home season. After drawing over 1,700 fans on Friday afternoon, OSU has brought nearly 3,000 fans through the gates at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field to start the season.

'It's always nice to play at home, especially in front of so many people,' Baldwin said. 'Everybody gets a lot more energized, and it makes it a lot easier for everybody. Everybody looks forward to coming to the park.'
