FRESNO, CA - The Bruin softball team improved to 25-0 on the season on Saturday at the Clovis Auto Row Classic in Fresno, CA, with a 7-2 victory over Utah and a 2-0 win over San Diego State. UCLA 7, Utah 2
The Bruin offense exploded in the top of the first inning against the Utes, sending 11 batters to the plate and scoring five runs on six hits. The rally started with a one-out single to left field by Andrea Duran, who was safe at second base when Stephanie Ramos hit into a fielders choice. Claire Sua followed with a two-run double to right center field. After a single to left by Jodie Legaspi that advanced Sua to third, Emily Zaplatosch followed with a ground-rule double that hopped over the fence in left center, scoring both Sua and Legaspi. Lisa Dodd ssingled, advancing Zaplatosch to third, and Tara Henry came up with an RBI two-out single to score UCLA's fifth run of the inning.
In the top of the second, Ramos led off with a single to right, advanced to second and then third on two ground-outs, and scored on a passed ball during the at-bat of Emily Zaplatosch. UCLA's third-inning run came on a one-out double to left by Caitlin Benyi, followed by a two-out double from Ramos, giving UCLA a 7-0 lead after two and a half innings.
The Utes closed the gap in the bottom of the third, as two consecutive batters were hit by a pitch with two outs, and both came around to score on a double to left field by Glennis Donnelly, bringing the score to 7-2 in UCLA's favor.
Goerl struggled with her control again in the bottom of the fourth inning, walking Ivette Hernandez, hitting Devina Quintero and walking Kate Nygaard to start the inning. Goerl then struck out Brianna Gourdin, got Sarah Lyman to ground into a fielders choice with Hernandez out at the plate and Jackie Wong was called out on strikes to end the inning without allowing a run.
Goerl recovered nicely from her start to the fourth inning, as she struck out seven of Utah's next nine batters after loading the bases. She finished with 11 strikeouts, including nine of her last 13 batters and the side in the sixth inning, while recording her 14th victory of the season.
Unlike UCLA's match-up with the Aztecs a week ago, the Bruins got on the board early, capitalizing on a single by Andrea Duran and the eighth home run of the season by Stephanie Ramos, a two-run shot to right field, giving the Bruins a 2-0 lead after one inning of play.
In the circle, freshman pitcher Lisa Dodd retired the first 10 batters she faced before allowing the first Aztec hit of the game, a single by Erin Mahoney. Dodd went on to allow just three hits while striking out three for her 10th victory of the season.
The Bruins complete tournament play with two games on Sunday at the Clovis Auto Row Classic. UCLA opens with an 11 am game against No. 18 Oregon State followed by a 3 pm game against host Fresno State.
