Bears Defeat Waves, 4-3
March 20, 2004
MALIBU, Calif. - No. 10 California slid by No. 31 Pepperdine, 4-3, thanks to Jody Scheldt's three-set victory on court No. 5. The Golden Bears played without the help of Raquel Kops-Jones for the second match in a row, as she sat out to heal an aching lower back. The Bears move to 12-3 on the season and resume conference play next week against Washington and Washington State.
After dropping two of three in doubles competition and matches in court No. 1 and No. 3, the Bears found themselves tied with the Waves at 3-3 heading into the final set on court No. 5. Scheldt, who made her return from a shoulder injury just 24 hours prior, felt the weight of the match on that very same shoulder.
Having split the first two sets 6-4 and 5-7, Scheldt and her opponent, Karin Schlapbach, battled it out. But in the end it was Scheldt picking up her 14th victory of the season, with a 6-4 win in the final set.
