Hollowell Tosses One-Hit, 18K Shutout Versus Louisiana-Lafayette

March 20, 2004

TUCSON, Ariz. - Alicia Hollowell nearly had another perfect game as the Wildcats defeated Louisiana-Lafayette, 2-0, in elimination play of the Kia Klassic Championship Saturday. The No. 1 Cats improved to 33-0 on the season with the win.

The Wildcats scored the only runs of the game in the bottom of the fourth, when Caitlin Lowe and Autumn Champion had back-to-back singles and stolen bases. Wendy Allen hit a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Lowe, and Jackie Coburn had an RBI single to score Champion.

Hollowell's perfect game was blown in the top of the seventh, when Louisiana-Lafayette centerfielder Hillary Guidry had a leadoff single. Arizona's ace won her 20th game of the season without a loss, allowing one hit, no runs and striking out 18 of 22 batters faced.

Arizona will take on Illinois for the second time in the tournament on Sunday at 9 a.m. in the semifinal round of the Kia.

UA extended its best start in history with the victory, eclipsing the 31-game record it posted twice previously to open seasons.
