Long Beach State Completes Series Sweep Over Baseball
March 20, 2004
LONG BEACH, Calif. - The No. 10-ranked Long Beach State baseball team completed its three-game sweep over No. 17 Arizona with a 4-2 win at Blair Field on Saturday. The 49ers' ninth straight win over the Wildcats dropped them to 11-10-1 for year while LBSU improved to 16-5 with its second series sweep of the season.
Long Beach starter Jason Vargas (3-4) held the Wildcats scoreless on just five hits over seven innings for his third win of the year. Tallying four strike outs four and walking none, the left-hander retired the UA side in order in five of the seven innings he worked while allowing back-to-back hits in just one frame.
Aided by two errors by second baseman Moises Duran, LBSU scored a pair runs each in the second and third off of UA starter Kevin Guyette (3-3) for the 4-0 advantage. The Wildcat right-hander was charged with his third loss of the year after giving up four runs, only two earned, on six hits in 5 1/3 innings on the mound.
The Wildcats finally got on the scoreboard in the eighth with a solo home run by junior Pat Reilly, his third of the year. And added another in the ninth, but it wasn't enough to stave off the first season sweep suffered by UA this season.
Arizona will open its Pac-10 season next weekend at home with a three-game series against Washington State. First pitch for the series opener against the Cougars on Friday is scheduled for 7 pm MST.
