Beavers Lose Series Finale, 5-4

March 21, 2004

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Utah Valley State rallied for a pair of runs in the ninth inning to beat Oregon State 5-4 in non-conference baseball Sunday afternoon at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. The Beavers (14-6 overall) left 12 men on base in the game, costing them a sweep of the three-game series; OSU had won 11-5 on Friday and 7-0 on Saturday.

The Beavers open Pacific-10 play at California next weekend, visiting the Golden Bears on Friday at 2 p.m., Saturday at 1 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. All three games can be heard on KEJO-AM (1240).

On Sunday, Utah Valley State (3-9) got a run-scoring single by Ryan K. Jones and a sacrifice fly by Trent Perry in the ninth inning off OSU closer Dallas Buck. The Wolverines took advantage of a leadoff single by Sam Van Dyken, an error and a walk to pick up the two runs and the lead.

OSU had gone in front 4-3 on Shea McFeely's solo homer to start the bottom of the sixth inning, but the Beavers left eight runners on base - including four in scoring position - over the final five innings.

'We didn't come out with the same intensity as we had the last two days,' OSU shortstop Tony Calderon said. 'When that happens, everybody is going play lackadaisical and you can't really recover when something goes wrong. You try to get all that energy up for one inning, and it's too late. You've got to have the intensity through all nine innings.'

It was the second straight week that the Beavers took lopsided wins in the first game of a series, only to lose on Sunday.

'It sinks in a lot more,' Calderon said of a second straight week of seeing a series sweep escape. 'We should have finished that team off. They weren't as good a ballclub as we are. We've got to come out with more intensity on Sunday and figure out how to put a team away.'

UVSC took the lead early, picking up a pair of first-inning runs on three hits against OSU righthander Ben Rowe. The Beavers evened things in the bottom of the inning on Calderon's two-run single down the leftfield line.

Rowe then settled in to retire seven of the next nine hitters he faced, but he couldn't make it out of the fourth inning as the Wolverines strung together three straight hits to take a 3-2 lead on Jeremy Harris' run-scoring single up the middle.

Rowe left with the bases loaded, one out and the top of the order coming up for UVSC; reliever Jake McCormick then got out of the jam with one pitch, getting Kevin Hashimoto to ground to OSU second baseman Chris Kunda to start an inning-ending double play. Oregon State tied the game 3-3 in the bottom of the inning when Andy Jenkins led off with a single and scored on a pair of Wolverine errors.

McCormick then finished off a a freakish run in which he got five outs on five pitches, starting with that one-poitch double play in the fourth inning. In the top of the fifth, UVSC's Jones fouled off the freshman righthander's first pitch, then flied out to right; Perry and Daniel Bulow followed with groundouts on the first pitches they saw from McCormick.

Jacoby Ellsbury ran his hitting streak to nine games for OSU with a 2-for-4 afternoon, raising his batting average to .417. Tyler Graham and Mike Lissman were also 2-for-4 for the Beavers while Calderon was 2-for-3.

For Calderon, who has struggled this spring after batting .362 this season, it was his first multi-hit game since Feb. 29. After being plagued by strikeouts the past several weeks, he fanned just once in the series against UVSC and drove in four runs.

'I talked to coach (Donny) Harrel a few times and he gave me a lecture about being confident,' Calderon said. 'It changed my whole approach. I went up there with a lot more confidence today and got a couple of base hits. It just felt good. Coach Harrel finally got me out of my own head.'

Reno Mendenhall and Jeremy Harris both had a pair of hits for Utah Valley State. Adam Sorensen earned the win in relief, pitching a scoreless 3 1/3 innings and allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out three.

McCormick still hasn't allowed an earned run this season after his scoreless 3 2/3 innings on Sunday, allowing just one hit and no walks while striking out two.
