Beavs Take Advantage Of Kansas Errors For 5-2 Win
March 21, 2004
CORVALLIS, Ore. - -
Oregon State (26-8) scored its first four runs without tallying a hit en route to a 5-2 win over Kansas (20-11) in the second game of Sunday's doubleheader.
Trailing 2-1 in the fifth inning, OSU took advantage of three Jayhawk errors and two wild pitches by Serena Settlemier to grab a 4-2 lead before Kelly Petersen tallied the Beavers' first hit of the day - a double - to score Adrienne Alo from third for the final of 5-2.
Ta'Tyana McElroy shook off a two-run homerun by Kansas' Serena Settlemier in the first and earned the win in 5 2/3 innings of work, allowing just three hits the rest of the way. Monica Hoffman earned her fourth save of the year to set the OSU career record with 10.
'We had two big wins over a good team today,' OSU coach Kirk Walker said of his team, which beat Kansas 7-0 in the first game of a doubleheader Sunday. 'Serena pitched a nice game for Kansas. She doesn't pitch very often. She throws hard, but was a little wild, and that worked to our advantage today.
'We did a good job of sticking to the gameplan and took advantage of our opportunities when they came along.'
'We hit well in the first game against their ace, and we played with a lot of intensity,' Walker said. 'Overall, we had very good pitching all day and played solid defense.'
OSU hosts a doubleheader with Missouri on Monday beginning at 1 p.m.; the second game starts approximately 20 minutes after the conclusion of the first.
