Cal Downed By Baylor, 6-1
March 23, 2004
Berkeley - The Cal men's tennis team suffered its eighth loss of the season to No. 2 Baylor Tuesday, 6-1, at the Hellman Tennis Center in Berkeley. The Golden Bears' overall record now moves to 4-8 on the year. Cal will get a shot at redemption on Wednesday, when it faces unranked BYU at 1:30 p.m., at Hellman.
Balazs Veress shined for the Bears, defeating the No. 2 player in the country, Benedikt Dorsch, 6-4, 4-6, 1-0, on court No. 1. His victory marked his sixth in a row, improving his record to 11-9 on the season. Veress earlier in the day fell out of the ITA rankings, despite not having lost a match since Feb. 22. The win will bode well in getting Veress back among the nation's elite.
In doubles, Veress along with partner Patrick Briaud moved into the national rankings today for the first time this year at No. 12. But the duo ran into the No. 10 team in Dorsch and Matia Zgaga. The two teams battled in what was a very entertaining, rally-filled match, but in the end the Bears from Texas came out on top, 9-8.
After facing BYU tomorrow, Cal hosts Oregon at 1:30 p.m. on Friday.
note:Wayne Wong reentered the rankings at No. 84 after falling out last week.
