No. 13 Cal Settles for Second at Western Intercollegiate

March 23, 2004

Santa Cruz, Calif. - Heading into the final day tied for the lead, No. 13 California could not hold off Colorado and finished in second place Tuesday at the Western Intercollegiate at Pasatiempo Golf Club. The Golden Bears shot a final round 292 (+12), while the Buffaloes shot 290 (+10). No. 4 Georgia Tech, also tied for the lead heading into the final round, shot 293 (+13) to finish in third.

Peter Tomasulo, who held the individual lead going into today's round, shot 73 (+3) to finish third at 1-under-par. He has not finished in the Top 3 in four out of five spring events. The Bears' senior owned the par 5's, shooting a phenomenal 7-under on those three holes for the tournament. Colorado's Kane Webber won the tournament recording a final round 68 (-2) to finish at 4-under-par.

Jeff Hood rebounded from a poor second round to shoot 71 (+1) and finish tied for 14th at 5-over. It was his third Top 25 finish in five spring events.

Michael Wilson looks to have finally found the form that has eluded him much of the spring. He capped a solid three rounds with a 74 (+4) and finished tied for 19th at 6-over-par - by far his best performance this spring. Unfortunately, a two-stroke penalty for grounding his club in a sand trap on the eighth hole cost Golden Bears a chance to tie for first in the team standings.

Playing as an individual, Brandon Beck showed the skill that made him a regular in the Bears' fall lineup. He shot 75 (+5) and finished tied for 29th at 9-over-par.

Jesse Ruda recorded a final round 74 (+4) and finished tied for 41st at 12-over-par, while Scott Carlyle's 75 (+5) was good for a tie for 45th at 13-over-par.

For Cal, the second place finish was its best of the spring. The Golden Bears have now placed in the Top 5 in seven out of nine tournaments this season.

Cal next takes to the links at the Arizona State hosted Thunderbird Invitational April 9-10.
