March 23, 2004
WALNUT CREEK, Calif.- WASHINGTON sophomore utility player Aimee Minor has been named the Pacific-10 Conference Softball Player of the Week, and ARIZONA sophomore Alicia Hollowell has been named Pitcher of the Week for March 17-22, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Minor, from San Jacinto, Calif., led Washington to the Kia Klassic Championship with a .533 (8-for-15) batting average and seven RBI in seven games. She boasted a 1.133 slugging percentage, including a double, triple and two home runs. Against Texas A&M on March 18, Minor had two hits and helped the Huskies get off to a fast start as she singled and scored a run in the first inning. The run proved to be all the Huskies would need, as they beat the Aggies 5-0. Minor saved her best game of the weekend for the championship game against No. 1 Arizona. Minor led Washington to a 7-6 upset of the top-ranked Wildcats as she was 3-for-3, including a double and two home runs. She knocked in six of the Huskies seven runs, as Washington ended Arizona's 34-game win streak.
Hollowell, a sophomore from Suisun, Calif., earns her fourth Pitcher of the Week award this season after a dominating week at the Kia Klassic. Hollowell was 5-0 over the weekend, including three victories over No. 15 Fresno State, No. 7 Oklahoma, and No. 10 Louisiana-Lafayette. She allowed 14 hits, two runs, seven walks, and struck out 68 batters in 35 innings of work. She led the Wildcats to a 4-1 victory over Illinois as she struck out 12 and allowed only three hits. In the 7-0 victory over Fresno State, Hollowell struck out 17 and allowed only three hits. She allowed only three hits in the 1-0 victory over Oklahoma as well, striking out 12 Sooners. Her best performance of the week came against Louisiana-Lafayette as she missed a perfect game by one batter. A leadoff single in the seventh inning was the only hit she allowed as she struck out 18 of the 22 batters she faced.
This is the first weekly honor for Minor and the ninth for Hollowell. The award is the 52nd all-time for the Huskies, and the 88th honor for the Wildcats.
