Arizona's Shultz and Oregon's Nyhus Named Pac-10 Player/Pitcher of the Week

April 6, 2004

WALNUT CREEK, Calif.- ARIZONA sophomore first baseman Shelley Shultz has been named the Pacific-10 Conference Softball Player of the Week, and OREGON junior Ani Nyhus has been named Pitcher of the Week for March 30-April 5, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.

Shultz, from Phoenix, Ariz., had two hits in two games over the weekend, to beat No. 2 UCLA, keeping Arizona undefeated at home (21-0) and giving the Wildcats a 2-0 record in Pac-10 play. Shultz' two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh on Apr. 3 capped an amazing comeback from a 5-0 deficit entering the inning. After a grand slam by Mackenzie Vandergeest to tie the game, Jackie Coburn walked with two outs, and Shultz knocked her seventh home run of the year for a walk-off victory, 7-5. A day later, after a 90-minute rain delay, the Wildcats again trailed, but Caitlin Lowe tied the game with a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth. One inning later, Schultz came up with runners at the corners and delivered a hit down the line to drive in the winning run. Her line for the week was 2-for-7, one run scored and three RBI. Both hits beat the defending NCAA champions and came against the 2003 Pac-10 pitcher of the year, a first-team All-American (Kiera Goerl).

Nyhus, from White Rock, B.C., was 3-1 last week, tossing two one-hitters. On Mar. 31, Nyhus gave up just one hit to Portland State's leadoff batter and then retired 20 consecutive batters to face the minimum number of batters, thanks to a double play. Nyhus then defeated No. 3 California, 4-0, on Apr. 2, allowing just four hits and striking out eight. A day later, Nyhus picked up her third consecutive shutout in a 1-0 win over No. 11 Stanford. Against the Cardinal, Nyhus allowed just one hit--the second batter of the game--and then retired 19 consecutive batters to face the minimum number of batters, due to a runner being caught sealing. She did not allow another runner to reach base after the first inning. For the week, she struck out 33 batters and had a 0.28 ERA, walking just two batters in 25.2 innings pitched.

This is the first weekly honor for both Shultz and Nyhus. This is the 89th weekly award all-time for the Wildcats and it is the 22nd all-time in Oregon's history.
