April 22, 2004
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Megan Devencenzi and D'Anna Piro have announced their plans to attend Oregon State and join the gymnastics team beginning in the fall of 2004, coach Tanya Chaplin announced Thursday.
Devencenzi (Rohnert Park, Calif./Rancho Cotate HS) qualified for next week's Junior Olympic national championships as a result of her fifth-place all-around finish at the Region 1 Championships earlier this month.
She took sixth on vault and seventh on beam at the regional meet as well. At the 2004 Northern California state meet, she finished third on vault and took fifth in the all-around and on floor. She placed third in the all-around and won beam at the 2003 Nor Cal meet. At the 2002 Region 1 Championship, she was third on floor and sixth in the all-around to qualify for the J.O. national meet.
'We're really excited about Megan coming to OSU. She had several opportunities at other universities, but she decided that Oregon State was where she really wanted to be,' Chaplin said. 'We're extremely pleased to have a student-athlete of her caliber joining the team. She has great desire and passion for the sport.'
Piro (Lake Oswego, Ore./Lake Oswego HS) won bars and placed fifth in the all-around at the 2004 Oregon state meet. It was the second year in a row that she claimed the state title on bars; she also won in 2003, when she took second in the all-around as well. She tied for fourth on floor at the 2004 Region 2 Championships after placing second on beam and fourth on bars at regionals in 2003.
'D'Anna is an excellent student and a hard working gymnast,' Chaplin said. 'She will bring a positive energy into the gym next fall.'
