April 26, 2004
BERKELEY - Nicki Wells, a two-time member of New Zealand's World Championships team, has signed a National Letter of Intent to compete for the University of California women's gymnastics team, head coach Cari DuBois announced today.
Wells, from Hamilton, New Zealand, has participated in competitive gymnastics for 12 years. She was selected to the New Zealand elite development squad at age 10, and four years later, won the New Zealand title on floor exercise and competed at her first World Championships in China. As a 17-year-old, she finished 15th in the all-around at the Commonwealth Games, and she returned to the World Championships last year in Anaheim, Calif.
Wells is the fourth recruit to join the Golden Bears squad for 2005. Jessica Miyagi, Allison Szutu and Siobhan Luce all signed with Cal in the fall.
