No. 16 Softball Rolls Past Saint Mary's, 7-1
April 26, 2004
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Freshman pitcher Brianne McGowan blasted a three-run home run and finished with four RBI to lead No. 16 Oregon State University to a 7-1 non-conference softball victory against Saint Mary's College on Monday afternoon at the OSU Softball Complex.
The victory upped Oregon State's record to 38-17 on the season, while Saint Mary's dropped to 11-41.
Saint Mary's got on the board first when the Gaels took advantage of a lead-off walk in the opening inning and Eleni Papailias came around to score after a single up the middle by Claudia Williams.
Oregon State knotted the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the second. Lisa Allen started things off with a double off the top of the center field fence and after advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt from Kelly Petersen, crossed the plate on McGowan's sacrifice fly.
A five-run fourth inning helped the Beavers put the game out of reach. Petersen got things rolling when she tallied an RBI single to center field that scored Vanessa Iapala, who had opened the inning with a single. McGowan followed with her three-run shot that sailed well over the 220-foot mark in straight-away center field. Pinch hitter Sherina Galvan roped an RBI double to right-center field that gave OSU a 6-1 advantage.
Oregon State added another run in the bottom of the fifth with a smart base running play by Longfellow, who tagged up at third and scored on a popped up foul ball near the SMC dugout.
'It's hard to play a single game on a weekday,' said OSU head coach Kirk Walker. 'But, we rallied late in the game and were able to get the runs that we needed.'
Allen finished the game a perfect 2-for-2 from the plate with two runs scored. McGowan recorded three strikeouts while allowing only three hits in five innings of work to improve to 9-3 on the season.
The Beavers continue non-conference action on Wednesday when they face Portland State in a double-header. Game-one starts at 5 p.m. at Erv Lind Stadium.
