Beavers Move Up To Eighth At Pac-10 Championships

April 27, 2004

MARANA, Ariz.- - The Oregon State men's golf team ascended two spots on the leaderboard Tuesday and sits in a tie for eighth after three rounds of the Pac-10 Championships at The Gallery at Dove Mountain Golf Course. The Beavers posted a third-round score of 382 and now have a team total of 1,148 with one round left to play.

Senior Sean Deacon again led OSU with a solid 74, including six birdies on the day. He is tied for 16th with a 5-over 221.

Junior Brad Simpson fired a 75 and is just two strokes behind Deacon with a 223, tied for 21st. Simpson had his third eagle of the tournament on the par-5 16th hole.

'We got off to a slow start but started getting some shots back in the middle of the round until we got to the 15th hole,' said head coach Brian Watts.

'We had about an hour wait on that hole and just couldn't keep our focus. (the wait was due to the leaders playing in front of OSU and Stanford, who were paired together)

'We hung in and fought back. Sean birdied three of his last six and Brad had it under par before we hit 15.'

Arizona State, after sharing the lead after two rounds with Arizona, posted one of only two team totals under par with a 356 and has sole possession of first place by nine strokes over Arizona. Defending champion UCLA had the low round of the day with a 352 and is in third, two strokes behind Arizona.

Two Sun Devils, Alejandro Canizares and Chez Reavie, share the lead after day two at 7-under 209. Canizares, the 2003 NCAA individual medalist, posted six birdies and an eagle on his way to a 6-under 66 and a share of the lead.

Junior Cameron MacKenzie posted a 77 and is tied for 45th with a 233.

Freshmen Ryan Gilmour and Jonathan Green have totals of 237 and 240, respectively.

Sophomore Brian Kelley has a total of 242.

'The course played tougher today,' said Watts. 'The pins were in much tougher positions and we short-sided ourselves.

'Overall, we played better today, but we didn't make up any ground.'

The final round begins Wednesday morning at 7:30 a.m.
