April 27, 2004

Tucson - The Washington men's golf team remains in fourth place entering Wednesday's final round of play at the Pac-10 Championships held at The Gallery at Dove Mountain in Tucson. Washington shot 8-over 368 during Tuesday's third round of play for a 54-hole total of 26-over 1106. Arizona broke out of tie for first thanks to a 4-under team score Tuesday to stand atop the leaderboard at 4-under 1076 entering the final round.

Washington senior All-American Brock Mackenzie dropped to fifth in stroke play after carding a round of 5-over 77. Mackenzie stands at 4-under 212 entering Wednesday's final 18 holes of play. Mackenzie entered the third round with a four-stroke lead on the rest of the field thanks to opening rounds of 67 and 68.

Arizona's Alejandro Canizares, the defending NCAA champion, posted a 6-under 66 Tuesday to tie teammate Chez Reavie for the overall lead at 7-under 209. UCLA's Travis Johnson and Arizona's Henry Liaw are tied for third at 211. The Wildcats' Josh Esler is tied with Mackenzie for fifth place.

While Mackenzie was struggling through is worst round of the tournament, several of his teammates helped the Huskies maintain their overall place on the leaderboard. Dan Potter, Corey Prugh and Alex Prugh all shot even-par 72 during the third round. Erik Olson posted a 75 and Reid Rader shot 79.

'Brock has been our work horse all year, and it was nice to see some of the other guys step up today,' said Husky coach Matt Thurmond. 'After yesterday we expected more, but its nice to the other guys step up. The five count six format is difficult. You have to have five guys play well and its usually the five or six guys that hurt you.'

Potter is in 10th place overall at 1-over 217 while Corey Prugh is 21st at 7-over 223. Olson and Alex Prugh are tied for 35th at 12-over 228 and Rader is 45th at 17-over 233.

Canizares, third-round tally was the low of the day and proved to be the difference as Arizona State separated itself from the 10-team field, posting a four-under-par total of 356.

Defending champion UCLA made the biggest move of the day, as the Bruins carded an eight-under 352 to shave four strokes off its deficit entering the round. Led by Travis Johnson (68/-4) and defending individual medalist John Merrick (69/-3), UCLA used four rounds at par or better to post just the fourth under-par team total of the tournament.

The Sun Devils seek its 12th Pac-10 championship since joining the league in 1978-79 and its first since 2000.

The Gallery continues to provide a stern test as just nine players are below par heading into Wednesday,s final round. Canizares, the 2003 NCAA individual medalist, and teammate Chez Reavie share the third-round lead with seven-under 209 totals. UCLA,s Johnson and Arizona,s Henry Liaw are tied for third place two strokes back at 211 (-5).

The Pac-10 Championships conclude Wednesday at The Gallery at Dove Mountain, a par 72, 7,435-yard layout. The conference championship is determined by teams of six players with the low five scores for each round counting toward the team total.
