Washington's Hathaway and Oregon State's Gunderson Named Player and Pitcher of the Week

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -WASHINGTON junior catcher Aaron Hathaway and OREGON STATE freshman left-handed pitcher Kevin Gunderson, have been named Pac-10 Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week for the week of April 20-26, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.

Hathaway, from Vancouver, Wash., went 6-for-13 (.462) with four runs, a double, a home run and four RBI in the Huskies' weekend sweep versus Arizona. In the 7-6 win on Apr. 24, Hathaway went 4-for-5 with two RBI, including driving in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth, narrowly beating out a double play try at first as the winning run crossed the plate. In the 12-11 win on Apr. 25, Hathaway drove in a run during Washington's four-run ninth inning that sent the game into the extra innings where the Huskies would eventually win in the 10th. He also picked off the only runner that tried to steal on the weekend.

Gunderson, from Portland, Ore., picked up two saves on the weekend to help the Beavers win their first series ever at USC. In the bottom of the ninth with two outs and a 4-3 lead with the tying run on second, Gunderson was called upon for the last out. In only five pitches he recorded the strike out and the save. On Apr. 25, Gunderson came into the game in the bottom of the seventh and went 3.0 innings giving up just two hits, no runs, and no walks, while striking out three for the save and the series clincher for OSU, winning 8-4.

The Player of the Week honor is the first-ever for Hathaway and the 43rd all-time selection for Washington. The Pitcher of the Week honor is also the first career honor for Gunderson and the 54th selection all-time for Oregon State.
