This Week in Pac-10 Softball
April 27, 2004
At the halfway point in Pac-10 play, one thing is for sure; The Pac-10 is one tough Conference... Conference teams have a .853 winning percentage in non-league games... The OREGON Ducks proved that no one is unbeatable in the Pac-10 as they knocked off No. 1 ARIZONA, 1-0 on Apr. 25... As the teams battle down the stretch, contenders such as STANFORD will have to win on the road, as the Cardinal start their travel in the desert this week and play six of their last nine Pac-10 games on the road... ARIZONA STATE got its first Pac-10 win, and is looking to build on that momentum and make a push for the postseason. The Sun Devils host CALIFORNIA twice this week... The Golden Bears will be hungry after they dropped two games at UCLA.... The Bruins have a very important Oregon swing, including a game against the Ducks on Friday afternoon. That promises to be as thrilling as the other two games the teams played this season. The Bruins and Ducks split the first two games, and each game was decided by a run... WASHINGTON is in need of a win, as it dropped three tough home games last week. The Huskies started Pac-10 play on a tear, and need to get back to their winning ways... Washington travels to OREGON STATE and Oregon this week.... The Beavers have already won more games this season (38) than they did all of last year (36).

She threw a four-hit shutout of the Bruins with eight strikeouts. Against the Huskies, she pitched eight innings, allowed two runs on only three hits. She also picked up her team-leading fifth save of the season in the Cardinal's 12-9 win over Washington on Apr. 25. Sorensen went 2-1 for the week in four appearances, pitching 21.1 innings with 26 strikeouts while holding opponent batters to a .173 average at the plate.

Sophomore Caitlin Lowe scored three runs last week, she has now scored at least one run in 42 out of UA's 47 games... Lowe leads the Pac-10 in stolen bases with 41, she has only been caught stealing once... The 'Cats have been on the road for three weeks, and now can look forward to seven straight home games... Oregon shutout Arizona 1-0 on Apr. 25, it was the first time the Wildcats failed to score a run since Feb. 21, 2003 when they lost 1-0 to Oklahoma State.
The Sun Devils beat Oregon State 7-2 on Apr. 25 to record their first win in Conference play... The Devils scored a run in the first inning of that game, snapping a 49-inning scoreless streak, dating back to Apr. 4... Senior Kristin Farber stole two bases last week, giving her 32 on the season, a new school-record... Junior Val Sevilla has a team-high 13 home runs, three of them have been grand slams... ASU travels to Tucson this week to play in-state rival Arizona, the Devils look for their first win over the Wildcats since Mar. 16, 2002.
By defeating Washington on the road on Apr. 23, Cal equaled its 2003 Pac-10 road win total of three... The Bears dropped two games to No. 3 UCLA over the weekend, all 10 of the Bears losses have come to teams ranked in the Top-25.... In its 38 victories this season, Cal is averaging 5.61 runs-per-game, in its 10 losses, the Bears are scoring an average of 1.1 runs-per-game... The Bears will be out for revenge against the Wildcats this week, they lost two extra-innings games earlier this year to Arizona.
The Ducks 1-0 victory over No. 1 Arizona on Apr. 25 was their first win over the Wildcats since 2000... With the victory, second-year coach Kathy Arendsen has now beat every team in the Pac-10... UO is just two wins away from tying its Pac-10 win total from last season (10)... Oregon is now 10-3 in games decided by one run... The Ducks are 10-6 against teams ranked in the Top-20, with four of those six losses coming to Pac-10 teams... The 1-0 extra-innings victory over Arizona was the first extra-inning win for the Ducks this season... Junior Ani Nyhus has collected all eight of Oregon's Pac-10 wins.
With 38 wins on the season, the Beavers have surpassed last season's win total of 36... A big reason why Oregon State is winning is its ability to win at home. Last season, the Beavers were 4-8 at home, this year they are 11-3 in Corvallis.... Six of OSU's next nine Pac-10 games are at home... Last week, Sr. Monica Hoffman moved into second place all-time at Oregon State with 698 career strikeouts... In addition to her 18 wins, Hoffman also has a Conference-best, five saves on the season... OSU's loss to Arizona State was just its seventh loss of the season to a non-ranked foe.
Stanford has won 8-of-10, including wins over No. 3 UCLA and No. 5 Washington... The Cardinal swept the Bruins and the Huskies on the road in the same season for the first time in school history... Senior Dana Sorensen now has 1,045 career strikeouts and moves into third place in the Pac-10, surpassing Arizona's Jennie Finch (1,028)... At the midway point in the Pac-10 season, Stanford has won more Conference games (8) than it did all of last year (7)... 23 of the Cardinal's 38 wins have come at home. But, if Stanford wants to compete for the Pac-10 title, it must win on the road, as six of its last nine Pac-10 games are away from home... In addition to earning Pac-10 Player of the Week, So Lauren Lappin has been named USA Softball Player of the Week.
The Bruins are slowly climbing back into the Pac-10 race. Since starting 0-4 in Pac-10 play, UCLA has won 4-of-6, with all four wins coming at home to teams ranked in the Top-15... Senior Keira Goerl now has a career record of 117-19 and has 986 career strikeouts.... Goerl ranks eighth on the NCAA's all-time list for Division I wins, and is the winningest active pitcher in Division I... In addition, Goerl needs just 14 more K's to become the 24th player in Division I history to reach 1,000 strikeouts, she would be the first Bruin to reach that milestone... UCLA defeated California twice over the weekend, and has now won 18-of-19 against the Bears.
Washington is second in the Pac-10 in runs scored with 235 thanks in a large part to Sr. Kristin Rivera... Rivera is hitting .445 with 46 RBI and 17 home runs, all number are in the Top-3 in the Conference... Rivera hit three home runs last week and is second in the nation, averaging 0.40 home runs per game...
