Women's Golf Team Earns Bid At NCAA West Regionals

TEMPE, Ariz.- The Arizona State women's golf team has earned a bid to the NCAA Women's Golf West Regional Championships, which will be held May 6-8 at the par 72, 6,154-yard Stanford Golf Course in Palo Alto, Calif. The selection marks Arizona State's 12th consecutive invitation in 12 years of NCAA regional action.
The Sun Devils head into the NCAA West Regional after tying for fourth at the Pac-10 Championships where ASU had two individuals in the top five: Alissa Kuczka (Phoenix, Ariz.) in fourth and Tiffany Tavee (Gilbert, Ariz.) in a tie for fifth. ASU is the No. 9 seed in a West Regional that features the champions of the Pacific-10 (UCLA), the Big-Ten (Ohio State) and the Big-12 (Texas) conferences. The Sun Devils begin the Regionals on Thursday, May 6, at 7:40 a.m. in a pairing with Stanford and Pepperdine. Tee times for days two and three of the Championships will be based on the team's place.
Last year, Arizona State finished in a tie for fifth at the NCAA West Regional held here in Tempe at Karsten Golf Course with Melanie Hunt being the team's top finisher in a tie for 25th. The Sun Devils have won an NCAA Regional three times with their last title coming in 1997.
Twenty-one teams and three individuals have qualified for each regional with the NCAA East Regional being held at Mission Inn Golf and Tennis Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. (Central Florida Sports Commission and Stetson University co-hosts) and the Central Regional being held at University Golf Course in Normal, Ill. (Illinois State University hosts).
Seven Pac-10 teams have qualified for the NCAA West Regional and account for six of the top ten seeds (No. 1 UCLA, No. 3 California, No. 6 Washington, No. 7 Stanford, No. 9 ASU, and No. 10 Oregon). Washington State is the 18th seed. In the Central Regional, Arizona is the No. 3 seed while USC is the No. 4 seed
The top eight teams and two individuals from each region will qualify for the NCAA Championships to be held May 18-21 at the Grand National Lake Course in Opelika, Ala., hosted by Auburn University.
