Gonzaga Edges WSU 10-9 In 4-hour Marathon

April 28, 2004

PULLMAN, Wash. - Jeff Culpepper collected three hits and drove home three runs as Gonzaga picked up a 10-9 non-conference baseball win over Washington State Wednesday evening in a marathon game at Bailey-Brayton Field. The Zags' win evened the season series at two wins for each team.

Nate Williams (2-1) picked up the win for Gonzaga (18-22), while Wayne Damon Jr. (2-4) took the loss for WSU (23-16).

Both teams went to the bullpen often, with WSU using seven pitchers and Gonzaga four. Neither starter, Brett Sommer for the Cougars and Bobby McEwan for the Zags, made it out of the first inning. James Freeman, Dane Renkert, Bradley Selinger, Wayne Damon Jr., Brett Beetham and Brandon Hundt also saw mound action for WSU, while Josh Monroe, Chris Albrecht, Nate Williams and John Gonzalez followed McEwan to the hill.

The game lasted four hours and seven minutes, thanks to numerous pitching changes, Gonzaga's 18 hits and 10 by WSU.

Gonzaga jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and stayed on top until the sixth inning. Sommer hit the first two Gonzaga batters he faced and the Zags added three hits in the opening inning, including David Johnson's two-run home run to left field. Kiel Thibault, one of the nation's leading hitters, had a run-scoring single in the first and finished the evening with two hits.

WSU's first score came in the bottom of the opening inning when Zach McAngus was hit by a Bobby McEwen pitch with the bases loaded. The Cougars' second run came in the third inning when Jason Freeman opened the frame with a triple to the wall in right center and then raced home when Jay Miller grounded out to second base.

Meanwhile the visitors added single runs in the second, fourth and fifth innings to take a 7-2 lead. Matt Reding's single scored Aaron McGuinness in the second inning and Culpepper singled home Marshall Bratton in the fourth. Bobby Carlson's fourth home run of the season came in the fifth frame.

WSU caught up with Gonzaga in the sixth with a five-run rally that featured back to back bases-loaded walks to Freeman and Miller and Grant Richardson's bases loaded single that scored Kaeo Rubin and Freeman. Justin Hart also had a run-scoring single in the inning.

Gonzaga wasted no time regaining the lead, scoring three runs in the seventh inning for a 10-7 lead. Reding, Culpepper and McGuiness each had run-scoring doubles as Gonzaga went back on top.

The Cougars then pulled to within one run in their half of the seventh, scoring twice. McAngus opened the inning with a single and later scooted home on Justin McClure's groundout to shortstop. Rubin then followed with a single to send Zach Franklin home after the latter walked with one out and moved to second on a wild pitch.

WSU returns to action Friday in a three-game Pacific-10 Conference series at Stanford. Friday's game starts at 6 p.m., with 1 p.m., starts Saturday and Sunday.
