Los Angeles - The UCLA women's rowing team travels to Seattle, Wash. to compete at the 35th Annual Opening Day Regatta this Saturday, May 1. The first race is scheduled for 10:20 a.m. PST.
UCLA will travel a varsity eight, second varsity eight, and novice eight crew to compete in Saturday's events. The UCLA varsity eight will compete in the 18th Annual Windermere Cup race, the featured event of the Opening Day Regatta. The Bruins will race against the University of Washington and the Italian National Team. This is the inaugural Windermere Cup and Opening Day Regatta appearance for the Bruins and their only out-of-state competition of the season.
The UCLA second varsity eight will compete in the Women's Erickson Cup against Pac-10 rivals Oregon State, Washington, and Washington State. The Bruins will also race Oregon State, Washington, and Washington State in the Women's Novice Eight competition.
Windermere Cup Notes
Windermere Real Estate and the University of Washington have sponsored the Windermere Cup for the past 18 years. The UW women have won 10 of the last 12 titles.
A Look at the Opponents
The UW varsity eight is currently tied for eighth on the US Rowing/Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association poll released Apr. 28.
The Bruins have only faced Washington this season in the Women's Collegiate Novice Grand Final at the San Diego Crew Classic (Apr. 4). The Huskies won the Sea World San Diego Trophy by winning the contest over California, Washington State, Oregon State, Clemson, and UCLA.
The Windermere Cup also marks the first time UCLA will have faced international competition in the three years women's rowing has been a scholarship sport.
UCLA competed at the 29th Annual Miller Cup Regatta on Saturday, Apr. 24, finishing in a dead heat with Loyola Marymount. It marked the first tie regatta's history, and UCLA and LMU were crowned 2004 Miller Cup co-champions. UCLA won its second consecutive title and fifth overall, while the Lions won their second overall title and first since 1979.
UCLA swept all other events, winning the Second Varsity Eight, Varsity Four, and Novice Eight competitions.
