Washington Golf Team Finishes Fourth at Pac-10s

April 28, 2004

Tucson, AZ - The Washington men's golf team placed fourth at the Pac-10 Championships held at The Gallery at Dove Mountain in Tucson. Washington shot 10-over 370 during Wednesday's final wind-whipped round of play for a 72-hole total of 36-over 1476. The finish was the best by a Husky squad since placing fourth in 2001. Husky senior All-American Brock Mackenzie carded a final round score of 72 to finish fourth in stroke play at 4-under 284.

Arizona won the tournament by posting a final-round score of 5-over 365 to finish at 1450. Arizona State held a nine-stroke lead entering Wednesday's round, but the Sun Devils shot 19-over to finish five shots behind their rivals. UCLA, which shot 383 during the final 18 holes, was third at 1470, six strokes better than the Huskies.

Arizona's Henry Liaw won medalist honors by shooting 4-under 68 during the final round for a three-day total of 9-under 279. Liaw was one of just two players who managed to shoot below par during the final round. Arizona State teammates Alejandro Canizares and Chez Reavie tied for second at 5-under 283. Canizares, the defending NCAA champion, finished strong with three birdies over the final four holes.

Washington's finish earned the Huskies an invitation to next year's inaugural Pac-10/Big Ten Challenge that will be played Oct. 24-26 at Pacific Dunes and Bandon Dunes in Bandon, Ore. The top four finishers at each conference's respective championship earn an automatic bid to the event. Oregon and Northwestern will participate as co-hosts along with one other at-large team from each conference.

Windy conditions during the afternoon played havoc with the team's still on the course. Washington's five scoring players were a combined five-under par after the first 11 holes before play was halted for one hour due to lighting in the area. After play resumed, the strong winds played a part in Washington's scoring players finishing the final seven holes at a combined 14-over par.

'We played pretty darn good considering how the conditions changed during the round,' said Husky coach Matt Thurmond. 'We were probably playing the best of anyone before the delay. When the wind came up we got a little sloppy and that was too bad considering how we had things going. It was an advantage to the teams that went out first and did not have many holes left to play. I watched one player hit a 2-iron from 220 yards and his ball landed 50 yards short of the green. It was pretty tough conditions.'

Mackenzie stood at 2-under before the weather delay. His finish was the best by a Husky since teammate Corey Prugh placed fourth in 2001. Mackenzie's previous best showing at the Pac-10s was seventh during his sophomore season.

'Brock was just outstanding this week,' Thurmond said. 'He had one bad hole that really kept him out of contention for the title. He played about as well this week as I've ever seen him play.'

Senior Dan Potter shot 76 Wednesday to finish 12th at 5-over 293. Corey Prugh had his best tournament of the season, finishing 21st at 12-over 300. Alex Prugh was 24th at 301 while Erik Olson was 28th at 302. Reid Rader shot 308 to finish 40th.

'Our freshmen wound up playing better and better each day and Corey and Dan really had solid tournaments,' Thurmond said. 'It was a good effort heading into postseason play. We were beaten by three of the best teams in the nation, but we finished ahead of some pretty good teams.'

Bids for the NCAA regional championships will be announced next week. The West Regional will be held at Crosswater in Sun River, Oreg.
