Legaspi, Dodd Homer as Bruins Beat Ducks 2-0
April 30, 2004
EUGENE, OR - Solo home runs by freshmen Jodie Legaspi and Lisa Dodd accounted for two of UCLA's three hits on the day, but those hits were more than enough as UCLA defeated Oregon 2-0 in front of 662 fans at Oregon's Howe Field in Eugene. Keira Goerl improved to 19-5 on the season, and needs just five more strikeouts to reach 1,000 for her UCLA career.
The game opened as a pitchers duel as Oregon's Ani Nyhus struck out six Bruins in the first three innings, while Keira Goerl allowed just one Duck hit over that same span. UCLA opened the scoring in the top of the fourth inning as Jodie Legaspi connected on her fifth home run of the season, a solo one-out shot to left field, before Lisa Dodd had a solo shot of her own two batters later to give the Bruins a 2-0 lead. Alissa Eno followed, connecting on a hit to left field for her first career base hit as a Bruin, a hit that chased Nyhus from the game.
Oregon opened the top of the fourth inning with a lead-off walk by Breanne Sabol, who went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Ashley Richards and to third on a wild pitch by Goerl, but the Bruins were able to get out of the inning holding the 2-0 lead as Beth Boskovich popped out and Kayleen Hudson struck out to end the inning.
That was all the help Goerl would need, as she improved to 19-5 on the season with a nine strikeout, one walk performance. Goerl now has 118 career victories, ranking eighth on the NCAA's all-time list, and needs just five strikeouts to record her 1,000th career strikeout.
The Bruins return to action with a 2 pm game on Saturday at Oregon State. UCLA then finishes the weekend schedule with a 1 pm Sunday game at OSU.
