Volleyball To Wrap Up Spring Season With Alumni Match
April 30, 2004
CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State volleyball team will return to Corvallis to wrap up its spring season with an alumni match on Saturday, May 8.
The match will be played at 1 p.m. (note the time has been changed from the previously announced noon start time) in Gill Coliseum, and admission is free.
The Beavers return all but two starters from the 2003 squad that finished with a 16-16 record. Outside hitter Allison Lawrence is back after earning honorable mention All-Pacific-10 honors in the fall, and outside hitters Anne Watts-Roberts and Karah Rhoades also return. Starting middle blocker Amanda Eggert is also back. A trio of freshmen - Brittany Cahoon, Michelle Franz and Abby Windell - and sophomore Katelyn Healy all saw starting time in the other middle blocker position last fall.
Coach Nancy Somera has been pleased with the progress her team has shown during the spring training period.
'Practices were very demanding this spring and the team responded with great intensity. With such a young group, we really felt like we needed to train stamina and develop the mental toughness that comes with enduring physical and mental fatigue,' she said. 'I like the way our offense is utilizing our quickness and has become less predictable. We are also responding much faster defensively and making more plays. We'd like to see ourselves back in the top three in the conference in digging stats next season.'
Somera places a high emphasis on defense, and the Beavers finished second in the Pac-10 for digs per game in both 2001 and 2002 but slipped to fourth for the 2003 season.
