Softball Shutout By No. 4 California, 6-0

TEMPE, Ariz. - The Arizona State softball team (31-26; 1-12 Pac-10) could only manage six hits against No. 4 California (39-11; 6-8 Pac-10) as they were shutout, 6-0, Saturday night at Farrington Stadium.
Cal jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the first. With one put, Lindsay James singled to left and moved to third when Haley Woods doubled off the centerfield fence. Kaleo Eldredge followed with a bloop single to left to plate James.
ASU had a chance to tie the game in the first when Kristin Farber singled, but was later left stranded at third. In the Cal third inning, Chelsea Spencer leadoff the inning with a solo home run off ASU starter Ashley Werschky (7-7) to make it 2-0. Cal then tacked on one more in the fifth off two ASU errors for the 3-0 advantage.
Cal followed with three more runs in the seventh off back-to-back home runs by Jessica Pamanian and Spencer's second of the night.
The Sun Devils could only get a single hit in the first six innings off Cal starter Kristina Thorson (19-3). Werschky suffered the loss, scattering 13 hits and giving up six runs, five earned with three strikeouts. She also had two of ASU's six hits. Valerie Sevilla did hit her team-leading and Pac-10 leading 17th double of the year in the sixth inning, but ASU's offense could not bring her around.
Eldredge led Cal at the plate with a 4 for 4 night with a run scored and an RBI, Spencer went 2 for 4 with two home runs and two RBIs, while Pamanian also went 2 for 4 with two RBIs.
