WSU Comes Within Two To No. 2 Stanford, Losing 13-11
May 1, 2004
STANFORD, Calif. - Washington State out-hit No. 2 Stanford 15-12 with the help of Justin Hart's four hits, but a grand-slam by Chris enabled the Cardinal to beat the Cougars 13-11 at Sunken Diamond in the second game of the Pacific-10 Conference baseball series.
'I was happy with the way we competed,' Cougar head coach Tim Mooney said. 'We gave Stanford a few too many freebies and they took advantage of them by producing runs. The key for us will be to continue to have our offense competing hard and for us to be able to capitalize on opportunities handed to us.'
Starting pitcher Aaron Trolia (4-4) went four innings for WSU (23-18, 5-9 Pac-10), taking the loss after allowing eight runs, five earned, and eight hits. Relief pitcher Wayne Daman Jr. allowed only four hits in four innings, but two were homers accounting for all five of Stanford's runs in the sixth and ninth innings.
Jeff Gilmore (7-2) recorded the win for the Cardinal (34-6, 9-2 Pac-10), pitching 5.2 innings, allowing five runs, four earned and nine hits while striking out four Cougs. Matt Manship earned his second save of the season by recording the final four outs of the game, allowing two hits and one run, which was earned.
WSU took a 3-0 lead in the first inning with two doubles and a single. Jason Freeman doubled to score Kaeo Rubin and then scored when Jay Miller had a two-base hit. Zach Kosturos singled to drive home Miller one batter later.
Stanford tied the game 3-3 in its half of the first with four hits, a walk and a Cougar error. Danny Putnam grounded out to score Jim Rapoport, who reached base on an error. Following a double and a walk Brian Hall and Chris Carter both hit run-scoring singles.
WSU regained the lead in the top of the third inning 4-3 following two Cardinal errors and Grant Richardson's single that drove home Rubin.
Stanford took advantage of three walks to take a 6-4 lead in the third inning. With the bases loaded after three walks, Hall hit a sacrifice fly to center field and Carter then singled up the middle to score Donny Lucy and Putnam.
With two walks and two hits, the Cardinal extended their lead 8-4 in the fifth. With two runners on, Carter singled to score Lucy and advance Hall, who then scored when Sam Fuld sacrificed.
WSU added one run in the sixth when Hart singled and later scored on Rubin's base hit.
Stanford increased its lead to 12-5 lead in the sixth when Minaker hit a grand slam home run, then added an insurance run when Lowerie hit a solo home run in the ninth.
With two outs in the seventh, three singles produced two more WSU runs, including a two-run single by Hart that scored Zach McAngus and Kosturos.
The Cougars added three runs in the eighth and one in the ninth to end the game. In the eighth Jeremy Farrar scored on a Freeman ground out. Rubin trotted home on a bases loaded walk and Miller then scored on a balk. In the ninth, Jeff Miller drove home Hart with a double.
Washington State will play the final game of the three-game conference series against Stanford Sunday at noon., at Sunken Diamond.
