Beavers Drop Series Finale to Washington, 8-5

May 2, 2004

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State's Aaron Mathews homered to extend his hitting streak to 21 games but the Beavers fell to Washington 8-5 in Pacific-10 baseball Sunday afternoon at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. OSU (27-14 overall, 7-8 Pacific-10) lost the weekend series to the Huskies (26-14-1, 10-5) but the Beavers won four of six from Washington on the season.

OSU plays at Portland on Tuesday at 3 p.m., and the game can be heard on KEJO-AM (1240). Oregon State then has a weekend off before returning to Pac-10 play at Arizona State on May 12-14.

On Sunday, the Beavers had two errors that played a part in five of Washington's runs. OSU also left 12 runners on base, with six of those in scoring position.

'There were some situational things that we didn't do very well and they cost us,' OSU head coach Pat Casey said. 'I felt we were prepared to play. We had some situations where we didn't do fundamental things that could have helped us out, could have helped us score some more runs or kept them from scoring some runs. We didn't do a good job in that area, and it cost us the series.'

Washington led 2-1 going into the top of the fourth inning and had Matt Lane lead off with a single through the left side, then OSU starter Jonah Nickerson walked John Otness. Ben Johnson then tapped a ball back to Nickerson and he threw to second with the possibility of starting a double play, but shortstop Tony Calderon had the ball go off his glove for an error to load the bases. Taylor Johnson followed with a grand slam to rightfield to make it 6-2.

OSU got three runs back with the help of a Washington error and a pair of wild pitches in the bottom of the fourth to get within 6-4, as Calderon singled home one of the runs off UW starter Tim Lincecum.

It stayed a two-run game until the top of the seventh inning, when Greg Isaacson led off with a sharp grounder against OSU reliever Kevin Gunderson that second baseman Chris Kunda misplayed for an error. With two out, Jared Sanders went to the mound and gave up a single up the middle to Nick Batkoski that plated Isaacson and made it 7-4.

The Beavers had a great chance to close the gap in the bottom of the seventh when Chris Campos led off with a single through the left side, then Cole Gillespie chopped a ball over third baseman Otness and legged it into a double to put runners at second and third with none out. But Paul Richie and Tony Calderon both grounded out to third, then Shea McFeely struck out swinging at a full-count pitch from David Dowling to end the inning.

Washington tacked on another run in the top of the eighth when Taylor Johnson was hit by a pitch with two out, stole second and scored on Brent Lillibridge's single. OSU got its final run in the bottom of the eighth on Andy Jenkins' pinch-hit homer to start the inning and the Beavers had a chance to get more when Jacoby Ellsbury walked with one out, but Mathews grounded into a double play to end the inning.

The Beavers did bring the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth after Husky closer Will Fenton walked Gillespie with one out and Calderon with two out, but pinch-hitter Mike Hass struck out to end the game.

'We had a lot of opportunities,' Gillespie said. 'We didn't take advantage with runners in scoring position, and things like that are going to hurt you in the Pac-10.'

Nickerson, a freshman righthander making his first start in OSU's home ballpark, dropped to 4-1 with the loss for his 3 1/3 innings. Gunderson, who had taken the loss on Saturday night, came back to pitch 3 1/3 innings and didn't allow an earned run.

Mathews was 2-for-4 with a first-inning homer, the only Beaver to collect more than one hit. The crowd of 912 ended OSU's string of eight straight home games drawing at least 1,000 fans; Oregon State is averaging 1,294 fans per home date this season.
