Dana Sorensen Pitches Two-Hit Win Over No. 1 Arizona

Tucson, Ariz. - Senior pitcher Dana Sorensen threw a two-hit gem as the No. 7 Stanford softball team defeated No. 1 Arizona, 2-1, this afternoon in Tucson, Arizona. The Cardinal improve to 40-13 overall, 10-5 in Pac-10 play while the Wildcats fall to 48-3, 12-2 in league play.Stanford got on the board first as shortstop Lauren Lappin led off the second inning with a single up the middle. Catcher Jessica Allister bunted for a base hit then first baseman Leah Nelson hit a single up the middle to score Lappin.
With one out in the top of the fifth, Allister hit a double to left then Nelson walked. With two outs, second baseman Meghan Sickler hit an infield single to load the bases. Rightfielder Katherine Hoffman reached base on an error by the pitcher as Allister scored to put Stanford up, 2-0.
With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Wildcat Samantha Quintero hit a solo shot to rightfield to make the score, 2-1.
Dana Sorensen (25-7) picked up the win in the circle for Stanford, scattering two hits over seven innings with seven strikeouts. Arizona pitcher Alicia Hollowell (35-2) took the loss, giving up two runs on 12 hits with nine strikeouts. The 12 hits was a career high for Hollowell.
The Cardinal close out their regular home season schedule next weekend, beginning with a conference match up against Washington on Friday night at 7 p.m.
