No. 18 Softball Drops Heartbreaker To No. 3 UCLA, 3-1

May 2, 2004

CORVALLIS, Ore. - No. 18 ranked Oregon State University held a 1-0 lead in the final inning, but No. 3 ranked UCLA rallied to score three runs to give the Beavers a heart-breaking 3-1 loss on Sunday afternoon at the OSU Softball Complex.

'I thought we fought hard and dominated most of the game for 6 of the seven innings,' said OSU head coach Kirk Walker.

Oregon State (39-21; 3-12 Pac-10) jumped on the scoreboard early, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning after capitalizing on three hits against Bruin All-American Keira Goerl. Lisa Allen sparked the offense with an infield single to open the inning and advanced to second base on a UCLA (34-7; 7-6 Pac-10) throwing error. Kelly Petersen's bloop single to center field advanced Allen to third and Brianne McGowan followed with a high-chopper through the right-side that gave the Beavers the lead.

OSU senior hurler Monica Hoffman dominated the game from the start and the Beaver defense was perfect early on behind her. Hoffman had a no-hitter going through four innings and after allowing a pair of Bruin hits in the top of the fifth, worked her way out of the inning with a pair of strikeouts and a fly ball.

The tide turned in the top of the seventh inning as Lisa Dodd belted a double to the left-center field gap to open the frame. Pinch runner Ashley Herrera eventually scored the game-tying run on a sacrifice fly from pinch hitter Kristen Dedmon. The Bruins added an unearned run, which proved to be the game-winner, when Andrea Duran battled the 21st pitch of her at-bat through left-side of the infield. Another sacrifice fly by UCLA made the final margin 3-1.

Goerl sat down the Beavers in order in the bottom of the seventh, recording her 1000th career strikeout to end the game.

Hoffman scattered four hits through seven innings of work and moved into fifth place all-time at Oregon State with 64 complete games.

'Monica pitched a great game,' said Walker. 'We fought hard and we played hard.'

Oregon State returns to action on Friday when the Beavers travel to Arizona State University. Game-time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
