Steven Sets German National Record
LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Oregon State's Birte Steven set the German national record in winning the 200-meter breaststroke Sunday in the Grand Challenge women's swimming meet at McDonald's Swimming Stadium. Steven took the race in 2 minutes, 26.15 seconds, and her competition in the open meet included NCAA champion Tara Kirk of Stanford; Steven's record time in her preliminary heat had been 2:25.95.
Steven also placed fourth in the 100 breaststroke in the meet on Friday, finishing in 1:09.26. The OSU senior will remain in the United States until mid-May, then go to her native Germany to prepare for that country's Olympic Trials. Steven will swim in one more meet on May 23, with the Olympic Trials beginning in Berlin on June 1.on June 1.
