CAL HOSTS CHALLENGE OF ATLAS AND ATHENA
California track and field hosts the second annual Challenge of Atlas and Athena, a two-day heptathlon and decathlon competition on Thursday and Friday. The multi-event competition is the brainchild of head coach Chris Huffins, a former NCAA decathlon champion and Olympic bronze medalist. The meet will feature open athletes, including Cal alum and Olympic hopeful Missy Vanek. A time schedule for the Challenge of Atlas and Athena will be available on www.calbears.com, later this week.

MEREDITH, SOBIERALSKI ENTER PAC-10 MULTI CHAMPIONSHIPS
Indoor All-American heptathlete Brooke Meredith and decathlete Scott Sobieralski will represent Cal at the Pac-10 Multi Championships in Tucson, Ariz. on Friday and Saturday.

Meredith, a junior, is currently ranked third in the nation and tops in the Pac-10. She set a school record of 4,088 points in the indoor pentathlon to win the event at MPSF Championships, Feb. 27-28. She went on to break her own record at NCAA Indoor Championships, March 12-13 where she finished third with 4,189 points. At this year's University of California Multi Meet, March 24-25, Meredith qualified for NCAA and Pac-10 Championships in her first heptathlon of the season with 5,511 points. That point total also moved her up to fourth all-time at Cal. Her event marks included a 143-00 (43.59m) in the javelin, breaking Missy Vanek's 'new' javelin record of 142-5. Meredith has since bettered her own school record with a javelin throw of 148-00 (45.11m). Meredith's other season-bests include 25.70 second 200-meter dash, a 2:22.39 800-meter run, a 14.53 time in the 100-meter hurdles, Cal's best high jump of the season at 5-07.25 (1.71m), a tie for Cal's best long jump of the season at 19-04.75 (5.91m), and a shot put of 42-01.00 (12.83m).

Sobieralski, a sophomore, won the decathlon at the UC Multi Meet with 7,086 points. His first decathlon for Cal was particularly impressive given that he was coming off a two-year hiatus during which he endured four surgeries on both his knees and shoulders. Sobieralski's season-bests include Cal's best 110m hurdles of the season at 14.40, an 11.39-second 100-meter dash, a 51.91 second 400-meter dash, a 4:52.50 time in the 1500 meter, a 15-09 (4.80m) mark in the pole vault, a 6-06.00 (1.98m) high jump, a 22-00.75 (6.72m) long jump, a 41-04.25 (12.60m) shot put, a 116-10 (35.62m) discus, and a 168-02 (51.25m) javelin throw. He is ranked 26th in the nation.

At last year's Pac-10 Multi Championships, freshman Elzunia Lamb finished sixth in the heptathlon with 4,688 points, including winning the long jump portion of the competition. Lamb is currently training in Poland for the Olympics. Junior Jason Gatewood competed in the decathlon for Cal, finshing tenth with 6,046 points.

MODESTO RELAYS
Some Cal athletes will also compete at the Modesto Relays this weekend, while others will take the weekend off to rest before Pac-10 Championships, May 14-15. For those who have not qualified yet, the Modesto Relays provide the final opportunity to attain a qualifying mark. The men's and women's hammer and discus occur on Friday while the remainder of the field events and all running events take place on Saturday. BIG MEET REVIEW
The California men snapped a three-year losing streak today to beat Stanford 96-66 at the 110th annual Big Meet last weekend. While the Golden Bear women fell to the Cardinal 108-55, they set four new school records in the women's 4x100 meter relay, the 100 meter dash, the 100 meter hurdles, and the javelin.

The women's 4x100 meter relay team (sophomore Osarhiemen Omwanghe, sophomore Tiffany Johnson, junior Shannan Hawes, and sophomore Antonette Carter) set a new school record at 44.38. The foursome broke the previous school record of 45.01 set last year by Omwanghe, then-freshman Jacqueline Earls, Hawes, and Carter. The squad lost by just a hundredth of a second as Carter almost overtook Stanford's anchor.

Carter had a phenomenal day, breaking the school record in the 100 meter dash at 11.53 seconds to surpass her own previous record of 11.61 set as a freshman last season. She won the 200 meter dash in a personal best 23.59, just 0.09 seconds off the school record to move up to No. 3 all-time from No. 5. In addition, the sophomore came in second in the long jump at 19-01.25 and aided the women's 4x400 meter relay team, finishing the third leg during an exhaustive afternoon.

Omwanghe set a new school record in the 100 meter hurdles at 13.43, breaking Laurie Smith's record of 13.58 set in 1992. As a freshman at last year's Big Meet, Omwanghe set a freshman record in the event.

Cal junior Brooke Meredith broke her own school record in the 'new' javelin of 143-00 (43.59m) with a mark of 148-00 (45.11m) to finish second in the event.

On the men's side, senior Vincent Ibia, sophomore Brandon Williams, and senior Bruce Giron swept the long jump with a 1-2-3 finish. Ibia qualified for Pac-10 Championships in his first meet of season for Cal with a 23-11.75 (7.31m) leap, Cal's best of the season. Ibia also qualified for Pac-10 Championships and NCAA Regionals in the triple jump with his third-place 50-04.50 (15.35m) mark.

Junior Rhuben Williams set a personal record in the hammer, winning the event with a 205-02 (62.54m) mark. The Bears swept the men's hammer. Williams also set a personal record in the shot put, winning the event with a 64-09.75 (19.75m) mark. Nikfar gave the Bears a 1-2 finish in the event with his 59-04.25 mark. To top the day off, Williams finished second in the discus as well, 166-02 (50.64m).

Giron won the men's 400 meter hurdles in 52.71 as Cal swept the event. The Bears pulled another 1-2 finish in the high jump with sophomore Teak Wilburn winning on a 7-01.50 (2.17m) mark and junior David Glasgow following in second with a 7-00.50 (2.15m) showing.

TOP 25
Both the men and women moved up in the Top 25 this week after the Big Meet. The women are No. 11, up two spots from No. 13, and the men climbed to No. 13 from No. 17, as of Monday, May 3.

Several of Cal's athletes rank among the top 20 athletes in the nation in their respective events. The women's 4x100 meter team (Omwanghe/Johnson/Hawes/Carter) moved up to No. 10 in the country with its school-record setting 44.38 time at the Big Meet. Cal is strong in the throws where senior Rhuben Williams is fourth in the shot, senior Sheni Russell sixth in the discus, and senior Amin Nikfar twelfth in the shot. In multi-events, junior Brooke Meredith is third in the nation in the heptathlon. In jumps, sophomore Teak Wilburn is second in the high jump, senior Bruce Giron is 14th in the triple jump, and junior David Glasgow is 19th in the high jump.
