Canada Cup Softball Final Wrap-Up
SURREY, BC - Five UCLA softball players, Caitlin Benyi, Lisa Dodd, Andrea Duran, Jodie Legaspi and Emily Zaplatosch are playing with the USA Schutt Elite Team this summer. The team has completed Canada Cup Play following an elimination bracket loss to China on Saturday. For complete Canada Cup information, please click here. USA 6, China 1
Two Bruins turned in multi-hit efforts against China in the first game of tournament play, led by catcher Emily Zaplatosch. Zaplatosch turned in a 3-for-4 game including a two-RBI single in the sixth inning, scoring Kristie Fox and Caitlin Benyi, who had both walked in the inning. Andrea Duran also had a multi-hit effort, going 2-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base. Lisa Dodd also scored a run in the game and Jodie Legaspi, playing right field, went 1-for-3 in the contest.
Australia 1, USA 0
USA Schutt Elite fell to the losers bracket with a Friday evening loss to Australia. Once again, all five Bruins started for Team USA, and two UCLA players accounted for three of the USA's four hits in the game. Caitlin Benyi led the way with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate, while Andrea Duran went 1-for-3 in the loss. The Australians scored a single run in the top of the first inning an held on to win the game. USA's best scoring opportunity came in the second inning when Benyi was thrown out at the plate on Duran's single to right center.
China 4, USA 2)
USA Schutt Elite's Canada Cup play came to a close on Saturday afternoon when the America team fell to China, 4-2 in an elimination bracket game. USA out-hit the Chinese by a 7-5 margin but could not push across the runs needed for the win. Benyi and Duran both went 1-for-3 in the game with Duran's hit coming on a double.
