Brunelli Earns Alternate Spot On US Olympic Swim Team

Long Beach, Calif. - Nick Brunelli, a former member of the Arizona State swimming and diving program, placed third at the 2004 US Olympic Team Trials held July 7-14 in Long Beach, Calif. Brunelli, who was one of six current and former Sun Devils to compete in the trials, was named as an alternate to the US Olympic Team that will compete in Athens, Greece, August 13-29.

Brunelli placed third in the 50m freestyle with a time of 22.39, which earned him an alternate spot on the US Olympic Team. Brunelli also competed in the 100m and 200m freestyle events, finishing tenth (49.80) and 37th (1:52.72), respectively.

Former Sun Devil Scott Von Schoff participated in the 100m and 200m freestyle events. Von Schoff finished with strong performances in both clocking a time of 51.15 in the 100m freestyle (19th) and finishing 20th in the 200m freestyle with a time of 1:51.25.

Rounding out ASU participation in the freestyle events at the trials was Bobby Zaabadick who swam in the 50m freestyle event, finishing with a ninth place time of 22.73.

Former Sun Devil Mandy Stanford finished 28th in the 400m freestyle with a time of 4:18.85. Stanford competed in the 200m freestyle event as well where she finished with a time of 2:04.47, placing 36th.

Senior Kari Wilcox placed 56th in the 200 IM finishing with a time of 2:27.08. Senior Bobby Crowder clocked a time of 2:07.51 in the 200 IM finishing 35th overall.

The swimming events at the Summer Games run August 14-21 while the diving events will be contested August 14-28. Current and former Sun Devil athletes will be on hand to compete for their home countries. Those athletes include Joona Puhakka (Finland, diving), �gnes Kov�cs (Hungary, swimming), David Kolozar (Hungary, swimming), Florencia Szigeti (Argentina, swimming), Ahmed Hussein (Egypt, swimming), Petra Banovic (Croatia, swimming), and Gavin Meadows (Great Britain, swimming). Current ASU coaches Mike Chasson and Mark Bradshaw will be in attendance, with Chasson coaching the Egyptian swimmers and Bradshaw the Finnish divers.
