Bruins Perform Well at U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials

Several Bruins ended their career this past week at the U.S. Olympic Swim Trials, while several returning athletes and alumni posted solid performances in Long Beach, CA. Highlighting the final few days of competition was senior Sara Platzer who advanced to the semifinals in the 50m freestyle, finishing 13th overall with a time of 26.00. She finished 37th in the 100m freestyle with a time of 57.69. Platzer was just one of five seniors swimming their last race for the Bruins.

Senior Noako Watanabe, competing in the 200m backstroke, moved up from second to last to 21st, just missing a spot in the semifinals, while swimming a lifetime best 2:17.65. Watanabe also finished 39th in the 100m backstroke with a time of 1:05.26.

Kristen Lewis, competing in the 100m (1:01.29) and 200m (2:14.95) butterfly swam solid races. She advanced to the semifinals in both events, finishing 15th overall in each event.

Also ending their career at the Olympic Trials were seniors Jackie Lobdell (400m freestyle) and Cathy Coler (200m breaststroke).P>Sophomore Kim Vandenberg was the highest finisher for the Bruins throughout the Trials, finishing fifth in the 200m butterfly (2:11.24). She also advanced to the semifinals in the 100m butterfly, finishing 11th overall (1:00.36).

Freshman Jane Imagane and Katie Nelson competed in the 800m freestyle. Nelson finished 24th with a time of 8:53.07 while Imagane finished 38th with a time of 8:59.92. Imagane also competed in the 400m freestyle, finishing 39th overall with a time of 4:20.79.

Two former Bruins took to the pool at the Olympic Trials; Bethany Goodwin and Keiko Price. Goodwin advanced to the semifinals in the 100m butterfly and finished 12th overall (1:00.46). She also competed in the 200m butterfly, finishing 38th with a time of 2:18.70. Price finished 17th in the 50m freestyle, just missing out on the semfinals by one spot, with a time of 26.15. She finished 35th in the 100m freestyle with a time of 57.49.
