2003-04 Baseball Year in Review

July 16, 2004

STANFORD won its second consecutive Pac-10 title and fourth in six years, winning the Conference crown with a record of 16-8, 46-14 overall. It was the 18th Pac-10 title for the Cardinal. Stanford was one of five teams to reach the NCAA Tournament, along with ARIZONA, ARIZONA STATE, UCLA and WASHINGTON. It was the first time since 1997 the Pac-10 has sent five teams to regional play.

Of the five Pac-10 teams, only Arizona made it successfully out of regionals, eventually finishing its season with a 3-1 loss to Georgia in the College World Series. It was the first time Arizona had been to the CWS since the Wildcats last won the national title in 1986. What makes the story astonishing, is that Arizona was the last Pac-10 team into the postseason, as it finished in fifth-place in the Conference with a 12-12 record, finishing 36-27-1 overall.

Coaching milestones were broken as well. During the season, Arizona head coach Andy Lopez recorded his 100th win at Arizona and Pat Murphy recorded his 400th win at Arizona State. Washington's Ken Knutson's broke past skipper Bob MacDonald's record of 422 wins as head of the Husky and is now the winningest coach at the helm of the Dawgs with 428 victories. Stanford's Mark Marquess is now the second winningest Pac-10 coach ever with a record of 1,190-565-5, passing Washington State legend Chuck 'Bobo' Brayton's 1,162 wins. UCLA's Gary Adams retired at the conclusion of the season, finishing his 30-year career as Bruins head coach with a record of 984-823-5.

Stanford's Jed Lowrie was named Pac-10 Player of the Year. Washington right-hander Tim Lincecum won Freshman of the Year as well as Pitcher of the Year, the first year ever the two awards have been won in the same season. UCLA's Adams won Coach of the Year for the third time in his career.
