Tamir Signs with Greek Team
July 20, 2004
BERKELEY - After sorting through several offers from European teams, former Golden Bear Amit Tamir has agreed to a two-year contract to play in Greece with PAOK Thessaloniki.
Tamir, a 6-10 center, averaged 12.6 ppg and 5.3 rpg in starting all 28 games as a senior for Cal last season. During his junior year, he earned All-Pac-10 honors after pouring in 14.9 ppg and 5.2 rpg. A two-time Pac-10 All-Academic selection, he was also chosen to the five-player CoSIDA Academic All-District squad in 2004.
After not being selected during the recent NBA draft, Tamir played three games with the Orlando Magic during its summer league season, then in four more games in a Las Vegas summer league. A native of Jerusalem, Tamir had hoped to be the first Israeli to play in the NBA, but decided his best opportunity was overseas.
The PAOK team will compete in Group A of the ULEB Cup during the 2004-05 season. Thessaloniki is the second largest city in Greece with over 1 million residents.
