Men's Soccer Recruiting Class Ranked Among College Soccer's Elite

Aug. 4, 2004

Stanford, Calif. - Fourth-year head coach Bret Simon will welcome one of college soccer's top ranked recruiting classes to The Farm this fall. The group was tabbed as the sixth best crop of newcomers in the nation by Soccer America.

A seven-member freshman class highlights the incoming group, including midfielder/defender Scott Bolkan and defender Mark Bartlett, a member of the New Zealand Under-20 National Team. Bolkan was rated as the eighth best incoming freshman by Soccer America, while Bartlett was listed as 20th in the publication's individual rankings.

The freshman class also includes West Regional ODP performer Evan Morgan and prolific prep scorer Dan Shapiro. Defenders Luke Sager and Ryan Oblak round out the group, along with Bay Area product Enrique Allen.

Included in the rankings are two transfers that will be joining the Cardinal squad this fall. Defender Jason Griffiths joins Stanford after playing three seasons at Middlebury College in Vermont. Griffiths is the lone graduate student on the team this season. Junior Cooper McKee also begins his first season on The Farm after helping St. Louis to a quarterfinal appearance in the NCAA Tournament last season.

Among the Pacific-10 Conference schools, Stanford's class trailed only the top-ranked UCLA group. The Cardinal and Bruins were the only two conference squads listed in the top-10.

Stanford men's soccer opens its season with a pair of exhibition matches at Maloney Field, facing off against Chico State on August 23 and Sonoma State on August 26. The Cardinal then hit the road to open up their regular season slate in Dallas against Tulsa and SMU on September 3 and 5. San Jose State will visit The Farm on September 10 in Stanford's first regular season home match of 2004.
