BERKELEY - Cal sophomore forward Leon Powe, who was voted the Pac-10 Freshman of the Year last season, has been named one of 50 preseason candidates for the 2004-05 John Wooden All-America team.Powe, a 6-8 forward out of Oakland Tech High School, averaged 15.1 ppg and led the conference with 9.5 rpg last year. In addition to his Freshman of the Year honor, he was also selected All-Pac-10, team Most Valuable Player and MVP of the Office Depot Golden Bear Classic. The first Golden Bear freshman to pace Cal in both scoring and rebounding since Shareef Abdur-Rahim in 1995-96, Powe obliterated the Cal freshman rebounding record in 2003-04 by pulling down 9.5 per game, well ahead of the former mark of 8.6 rpg by Bob McKeen in 1951-52. His 256 total rebounds were also a school freshman record and the 14th-highest overall total in Cal annals.Powe is one of six Pac-10 players on the Wooden preseason list, joining Ike Diogu (Arizona State), Channing Frye (Arizona), Chris Hernandez (Stanford), Nate Robinson (Washington) and Salim Stoudamire (Arizona). In mid-January, the Wooden Award committee will release its midseason Top 30 candidates and on March 29, the 10-player Wooden All-American team will be announced. For a complete look at the 2004-05 Wooden Award Top 50 Preseason Candidates, click here.
